In-Service Learning

12 hours of In-Service education is required by the New York Department of Health for all Certified Home Health Aides each year. Home Health Aides need to keep their skills sharp and learn new ways to care for their patients.

Many In-Service classes teach new skills as well as evaluating a caregiver’s current level of competency. We do this with hands-on education in the SARA Training Center, as well as by providing our caregivers with online lessons and videos about relevant subjects.

In-Service classes address a wide range of topics including, but not limited to:

  • Alzheimer’s / Dementia Care
  • CPR
  • Cultural Awareness
  • Nutrition
  • Diabetes
  • Flu Season Preparations
  • Chronic Illness Management

Why Are In-Service Classes Important?

At SARA, the health and well-being of our patients is of utmost concern. Our In-Service classes should not only instill clinical knowledge, but the importance of empathy and kindness when you’re with a client. Caregivers must always remember that while they are working, they are guests in someone else’s home.

The client/patient should always be treated with respect and it is the caregiver’s responsibility to keep them safe and comfortable at home.

SARA wants our caregivers to be the finest in the New York metropolitan area. Caregivers who grow with SARA can reap many financial rewards as they move up the Caregiver Levels. In addition, they gain the satisfaction of caring for people who need the most assistance.

Learning is a life-long process. Over the years, many of our caregivers have begun as Home Health Aides and used the position as a springboard into other Healthcare professionals including becoming medical technicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, and even Registered Nurses. It all begins with an open mind, excellent teachers, and the right materials for success.

And don’t forget, while many subjects can be taught in an In-Service class, some attributes like compassion and integrity should come naturally to caregivers.
